Introduction

My name is James and I am continuing my search for great mountain properties to build a deck on and pitch a tent, or build a cabin or just throw down a pad and view the stars.  This week we are checking out the state of my birth: North Carolina.  Fondly referred to as the Tarheel State, or Cackalacky by denizens and proud diaspora around the country, NC boasts some of the finest recreation areas in the US.

  • The Outer Banks on the east coast of North Carolina offers 100+ miles of barrier islands flanked by the Atlantic Ocean on the east, and several warm water sounds on the west.  Wide open beaches, cute towns, lighthouses and plenty of protected land areas provide a wealth of ongoing entertainment.
  • The Lakes District in north-central North Carolina offer miles of hiking trails, bike routes, and blue waterways so adventurers can run, walk, bike and paddle to their heart's content. Along with great fishing, camping and every nameable water sport.
  • The Mountain Region on the western edge of the state is our sweet spot!  Home to stunning vistas, rich Appalachian heritage, myriad quaint mountain towns, and of course, The Great Smoky Mountains!
